Activity for Module 3

Create a text file and record its SHA-256 hash. Change a single character and hash it again. Compare the two values.

Windows PowerShellGet-FileHash file.txt -Algorithm SHA256
Windows Command Promptcertutil -hashfile file.txt SHA256
Linuxsha256sum file.txt
Macshasum -a 256 file.txt

Then complete a chain of custody record for a USB drive handed from a manager, to an IT officer, to a lab. Use the chain of custody template (PDF) or your own table. For each handover record: the item (description, make, model, serial number), who handed it over, who received it, date and time, location, where it is stored, and the reason for the transfer.

Activity for Module 5

Using the price-list scenario from Module 1 and the made-up facts below, write a one-page case note and highlight one limitation. You submit it with your final assessment.

MADE-UP FACTS FOR THE CASE NOTE
  • Case ID DF010-DEMO-01. The examiner is you.
  • Authority: a written request from the HR director dated 2 May 2026, to examine one company laptop (a sales manager's) for files related to the Q2 price list.
  • Item received: one laptop, imaged by your lab. SHA-256 of the image (made-up): 9f2c1e7a5b3d4c8e0a6f1b2d3c4e5f60718293a4b5c6d7e8f9012a3b4c5d6e7f.
  • Finding 1: the file Price_List_Q2.xlsx was last modified on 4 May 2026 at 10:42, as shown by the file system.
  • Finding 2: the company mail log shows an email with an attachment of the same name sent to an outside address at 10:58 on 4 May 2026.
  • The mail server keeps logs for only 30 days, and the laptop's time zone setting could not be confirmed.
  • The browser history was outside the scope of the request and was not examined.

Write facts as facts, with times and sources. Keep opinions separate and labelled. Never write guilty or innocent.

Final assessment and certificate

  • The final assessment has 10 questions. The pass mark is 70 percent.
